Sounds like you don't have the correct Address that is associated with their iMessage.

When you respong to a amessagwe you use the address the message camefrom, not the one stored on your device. when you start a new message you use the one stored on your device.

If your friends had an iPhone and then changed to to a different brand of phone, their phone number would have been removed from their iMessage account. If you are using their phone number to message it won't go through, as its no longer asociated with iMessage. You would need to use their email address that is associated with iMessage instead.

Are you using a phone number or a email address? Do they have iPhones or just iPads?
