Problems with Safari - server not found - for no reason!

Just in the last week when I go to a webpage (and it can be any random page and its intermittent) it will come up blank saying "Safari cannot open the page because the server cannot be found" HOWEVER there is nothing wrong with my internet connection or with the website I am trying to navigate to.

Example, I wanted to go to mailcall couriers. I click on the link on my favourites bar, I get the above error message. I got to google and try access it, same thing. I go to google and click on a sub page link (like contact us) and it is fine and I can then navigate to their working home page from there.

Safari seems to do this routinely with some pages but not all, and not always the same ones. Sometimes the pages will open sometimes I will get this error - but if I try opening that same page at teh same time on my ipad its fine! So it is not the website or the internet.

I have tried resetting safari, clearing cache etc... to no avail.

NOW, on a similar note, I have numerous open pages in safari on my iphone 5S - as of today - all thos pages are coming up witht eh same above error message and wont open

Safari 7.0.1

Any help is much appreciated as this is driving me insane.

For 3 days I could not connect to two websites and got the msg cannot connect because safari cannot find the server. All other sites worked normally. This was true on my iMac and two iPads, all working off of wifi. After checking forum comments, I did not get into the DNS solution but just cut the power to my modem and router for a minute. After reconnecting, those two websites worked fine. Don

And most ISPs will have you recycle the modem and router if it is not performing as it should as a first step.

Some ISPs actually do have good forums and some are public forums or just look through.

I can go months with no issues and then have a week of trouble, often after a storm or event that affected our backbone.

Make sure your networking equipment like modem and router are on battery and surge UPS, that can protect or minimize damage - mine were but not filtering the coax coming in and modem was operating at 40%, barely able to function and connect. Could not work on ISPs new modem but did on retail Surfboard. Finally they replaced some of the outside equipment where the line connected on a utility pole that the storm damaged.

Running into this "Safari - Server not Found issue" as well on a new MacBook Pro laptop running OS X 10.10 Yosemite. I'm at work, connected through WiFi and 99% of the time, no problems. However, sporadically seeing this issue pop-up where Safari (and even the App Store) gives this message. Tried multiple internal and external URLs without success. Opened websites in Chrome and all sites worked!

Tried quitting and reopening Safari, deleting cache, renewing DHCP lease, and changing the network location within network preferences, etc. but without success. ONLY thing that fixes the problem is a restart.

Apple, why is this happening with Safari – or anything that seems to use WebKit?

I am also encountering this problem on a Macbook running Yosemite 10.10. I will be browsing along, minding my own business when all of a sudden, a page will give me the dreaded error message. It seems to be very random - I can go down a page of Google results and some links will result in an error message while others don't. It's not truly a server/website problem as I can access the same page from my phone. Nor is it a WiFi/network problem, as this has happened while I'm on my home network and also while I'm at work. I've tried a few suggested fixes from various forums, but the only ones that seem to work - at least temporarily - involve quitting and restarting Safari, which leads me to believe that the quit/restart is what's actually helping, rather than any of the setting tweaks.

Has anyone had any luck resolving this issue permanently? Has anyone noticed if the latest Yosemite update (10.10.1) fixes it? I have yet to get around to updating...

Relatively recently my Belkin router has been keeping me from accessing a website that I maintain for a band I am with. To my knowledge, it is the only site that I can not access on a regular basis and this has been going on now for at least the last 3 weeks. Once in awhile when I try to log in, the site pops in like nothing is wrong. Then the next time I try, my browser tells me it can not connect to the site. Then it might be days before it connects again. The site in question is up but my router will not take me there. I can access the site by going through an ethernet connection and bypassing my Belkin router. I spent 3 hours on the phone with 2 savy Belkin techs and neither could solve this dilemma. I also spent time with a tech with Charter, my internet provider, and they eventually told me the issue is not connected to the modem, rather with my router. My belkin N600 DB Wireless N+ is only a year and a half old. There are 3 computers (2 Macbooks) and my wife's windows pc. None of the computers can connect, however, the times when I've been able to get on since the problem has surfaced so can the other computers connect.

Changing DNS numbers does not help. Changing router channels does not help. Resetting the modem and/or the router does not help. Even a factory reset of the router did not change things.

Whether or not a firewall or virus program is on or off does not make any difference.

I've scoured the internet to see if someone has found a solution to this frustrating mystery. This particular discussion seems to be germain to my issue. I've tried so many suggestions, none of which have solved the issue, that I'm almost convinced I'll have to buy a new router if I want to access the site through my wireless set up at home. Otherwise in order to access the site I have to connect to ethernet. While that allows me to log in to maintain the web page, it is not the solution to the connection issue with my wireless router.....which used to work just fine before something changed in the past several weeks.

I use a MacBook Pro with 10.10.1

CELEBRATION! CAROLYNNT, read to see if this helps you!

I've finally found the reason for my problem and have resolved it. I found this thread and the entry by Tezgno on page 7 may be helpful to those of you still trying to figure out why you can't access a site. The thread is about the Airport Extreme base router but is appropriate for other wireless router setups. Click the link but you will have to go to page 7 to read Tezgno's reply Airport Extreme Website block..

I contacted lunarpages where the site I maintain, which I could not access, is located. It turns out that I was trying to log in on web address for the logout page. I'd enter the username and password and it would act like it was going to log in but instead come with a log out message. So I'd log in again (the web address was now for the log in page) and in I would go. Apparently each time I did that the server was keeping track of the unsuccessful attempts and eventually my IP address was blocked. When I called tech support at lunarpages the problem was quickly solved. So now I make sure that when I log in I do so on the page with the log in web address.

Long story short, after days of trying to solve this through my router tech and internet provider tech support, in addition to searching the threads, I was in the dark until I read Tezgno's explanation that the site had blocked me and the solution was to remove the block. I was not able to do this myself so I had to contact support at the site and have them remove the block. So for now, all is well.

If Tezgno happens to read this thread, THANK YOU, Tezgno! Your explanation and advice worked and I am very appreciative of your help!

I am having the same issues. Installed Yosemite on 2 MB's and 2 Iphone's and having the same problems -- pages won't load at times. When I go to Google Chrome seconds later the pages load fine, switch back to Safari and same problem. Seems like on the Iphone's if I turn off Wi-Fi that the problem in safari is resolved. This happens on different wi-fi networks and my 12 yr. old MacBook Pro running 6 yr. old OS never has the issues and on average is running 2-3 faster than Yosemite Safari - sad but true.

Yosemite Safari is horrible as it's slower and unreliable as it can't load webpages and stalls at the 25% load progress mark.

This is a bug with Safari. It has existed for quite sometime. Apple won't admit it is an issue on their end. Kind of like the iPhone keypad that never seems to get the right letters correctly when you type. So called "fat fingering". It will exist for time and all eternity because true to apple, and as much as I love apple, they do not like to admit when bugs exist. This problem with Safari has been around since the release of Yosemite. Sometimes you will open a web page, click a link or go to another page within the site and it will immediately return a page not found. Something in Safari is disconnecting and it happens on every Mac I have ever used in multiple places.

Have been trying for several days to call up this website, http://de.creative.com/ or any other to download Sandblaster software for my newly ordered Creative Sound Blaster E5. Safari reports Server not found, also for all there other sites. My iPad at work using my vodafone sim card loads it. At home using my Wlan net ....server not found. Tried Firefox and cab as alternative browsers.....no joy. I use an apple Time capsule connected to a KabelBW modem. Disabled wifi on my iPad at home and woe and behold it logged on to creative.com. Does this mean that the problem lies in my Time capsule...???? All other sites work

That is possible. Your Time Capsule has a place to put DNS numbers, which are then dispensed to each station that requests a local IP address using DHCP to operate on your home Network. If the numbers entered in your time Capsule are wrong, they will be passed out to every device on your network when it connects over Wi-Fi.

It would be far more convenient (for all the devices you use) in the long run to install the correct numbers rather than deleting them and providing none.

The correct numbers are those provided by your ISP as the first choice, and if you are in the US, a common free DNS such as OpenDNS or google DNS can be used instead.

Open DNS uses:

208.67.220.220

208.67.222.222

The Google Public DNS IP addresses (IPv4) are as follows:

  • 8.8.8.8
  • 8.8.4.4

To use these in your Time Capsule or Airport base station, launch Airport Utility.app (should be in your /Applications/Utilities folder).

DNS Servers are entered on the Internet pane, about halfway down.
