custom repeat of calendar dates from iCloud on iOS device

Iphone 5, up to date IOS, desktop Mac with both connectected via ICloud. I am unable to create "custom" repeat events on the Iphone 5, but can perform custom repeats on the Mac? Am I missing something in setting the repeat dates on the Iphone, or is this the way it is supposed to work?
