Ipod 2nd gen won't start, requests restore. Alternative?

My iPod died the other day so I charged it and the Apple logo showed up followed by the connect to itunes sign. I connected it a few days later and it says my iPod is in the proces of restoring and I have to restore it. However I don't want to lose anything! I have the best music and old games that I will lose forever because they were never backed up on my computer. I have tried holding down the power and home buttons repeatedly but nothing changes. Please help me! Thanks

iPod nano, iOS 4.3.1

You have to restore now and thus erase the iPod. If problems:

- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on

- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

- Try another cable

- Try on another computer

- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
