Updating from iOS 5.1.1 to current version

I have the iPad 3rd Generation. Is it possible to update/download te current iOS version? I understand that if you have the original iPad, the highest iOS is 5.1.1. When I checked the serial number, it listed my unit as iPad 3rd Generation. I have no idea if that means mines an "original" or not. I've heard of people jailbreakng there units. I have no idea what that means, or if it's possible with my unit.

Thank you.

If you have a third generation iPad, it can be updated to iOS 7.0.4 only. You cannot stop at iOS 6 or anything in between. You have to update all the way.

If your iPad has a camera, it can be updated to iOS 7.0.4. Only the original iPad did not have the camera so if it has a camera it is not the first model of iPad. All other iPads except the iPad 1, can be updated to iOS 7.0.4.

Jailbreaking is modifying the iOS or hacking the software. It is a bad idea to jailbreak. If you do it, you run the risk of downloading viruses and malware and you would also lose any support that Apple might be able to offer, if you needs help in the future.
