I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro, 15" with USB2 and Thunderbolt. Any way I can add USB3 working in Snow Leopard? The thunderbolt docks require Mountain Lion 10.8 and rely on Apple USB 3 drivers that do not exist in Snow Leopard. Also I have no express card slot so I can't use Express card based adapters.

USB 3.0 is unsupported by Snow Leopard as well as your computer. You cannot add it. You may be able to upgrade to Mavericks but you cannot get USB 3.0 support on your computer model.

If I want to use Mountain Lion or Mavericks, I can get this dock

No. Upgrade and buy the CalDigit device if your computer has Thunderbolt.
Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.

To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
