Filevault stuck

It keeps going from 22-14-16 hours remaining. Can I turn it off? Why is it taking days? Will it mess up my computer if I shut it down?

Im running Mavericks

I have 1TB with 872 free

I know it is supposed to take a while, but I am getting concerned. I let it run for 24 hours and is in the same spot.
