Q: No battery icon

I've had a gen 1 iPod Touch lying unopened for over 4 years. After finally opening it, I find there is no battery icon being displayed.  If I connect it to a computer USB port, the iTunes connect icon shows up - but no battery icon. And when I try to set it up with iTunes ( thro' Win 7), I get a message that the iPod could not be restored . Do I need to have the battery replaced? Is that worth it? What are my options?

What is the complete wording of the error message?

Have you left it connected/charging overnight?

    Thanks for your response.

The exact wording of the error messsage is : "The iPod 'iPod' could not be restored. An unknown error occurred."
And, yes, I have left it connected/charging overnight - both to the PC USB, as well as to the wall with the AC adapter. But no change.

    Try another cable

    Try another USB port

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

    - Try on another computer

    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Chancher, I noticed you stated this iPod was in the box for 4 years. I'm guessing it will never charge, here's why; if you completely drain a Li-ion battery, I mean stone dead, completely discharge it, it will never charge again. If a Li-ion completely discharges it deionizes and becomes useless, 4 years in box would be more than enough to kill the battery. You may want to contact Apple about purchasing a new battery. What I don't understand is why the battery icon is missing, that's weird. Good luck, Cheers.

Hi Illass:  I don't have another cable, but I've tried it on another USB port, another PC. Also tried the Recovery Mode, DFU mode, Restore Mode, but still get the same error message :The iPod 'iPod' could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1)"  Note that I had left out the ""(1) in my previous email. I guess I'll try the Genius Bar

JEM23 24: I think may have it right - completely drained battery. Any idea what Apple will charge to put in a new battery? Or should I invest in a newer iPod?

    Thanks all

Hi Chancher, If I'm reading it right, a new battery is $59 plus shipping and handling and taxes. As to is it worth it... that's your call, I would think for music play back would work fine, but an iPod 1 is very out of date for most apps. Hope this helps, Cheers.
