iTunes playing music from external hard disk

I have a normal folder (not a folder created by iTunes) on my external hard disk with my music backup in mp3 format (around 500 Gb... yes 500 Gb). I want lo play my music from the external hard disk with iTunes on Windows 7.

I tried "create new library" option, and after "choose new library" on the external hard disk but I can't add the music from the external hard disk to the library. When I try to add the music is the actual small library from my laptop hard disk that is loaded.

I can't even add 1 file at the time. Anyways I need a way to add all the files in the external hard disk backup in one time to the new library.

A detailed explanation of how to do it will be appreciated.

Hi laucha13,

Welcome to the Support Communities!

The article below may be able to help you with this. Click on the link to see more details and screenshots.

I would suggest keeping your first external drive as a backup for your Music files. Then get a second portable external drive with at least 1 TB of space for your iTunes library. Follow the steps in the article below to move your existing iTunes Library on your PC to the external drive.

Then, follow the steps below to add the contents of your Music folder to your iTunes library:

I hope this information helps ....

Have a great day!
