The article below has some troubleshooting steps to consider for this issue. I would follow all of the steps in the order given. Especially relevant are making sure you have the latest software updates (#2), creating a new user account to see if the issue persists (#7) and removing the FCPX preference files (#10).

Thank you all for your input but I had already tried all the usual remedies. In the end I contacted Apple and it turned out to be a corrupt file. Unfortunately, the guy took me to so many places in the system file, and he trashed so much stuff, I'm not altogether certain what caused the problem. He took him over an hour to get there, but for me it was time well spent. Thanks once again
