Why does my DVD chop off the top

I have formatted my iDVD to produce in the wide-screen format, and when I play the video in iDVD, it plays the way it should. But, everytime I burn a DVD & play it on my television, the tops and bottoms of the video are cut off. It's as if the DVD zoomed in on the video. Is there anyway to fix this?
