I use my computer for work teleconferences and need to mute my internal mic. When I check the " mute" box in System Preferences>Sound>Input, I wind up muting the output, so I can't hear my colleagues. I need to work while I'm on calls, but the others hear my keyboarding. Can someone please help me mute just my internal mic for phone call purposes? I make my calls via Google chat.

Put a piece of tape over the mic. Not sure if that will work but it's worth a try.
That "mute" checkbox--even though it appears in the Input pane--controls output volume. To reduce the mic volume to zero, use the "Input volume" slider bar in the Input pane.

Untick the box(es) for volume and user sound effects in System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects
