HP Officejet 8600 scan to computer won't work

I just purchased the HP Officejet 8600 Pro. It works great and was super simple to get going. However, I cannot Scan using the panel on the front of the printer. I select my computer, select the form I want to scan to, click Start Scan and it does nothing. The HP Scan software works, but that's if I want to have my Macbook Pro with me. I'd like to use the ability to just scan from the printer.


I noticed on the HP forum that this is not an unusual problem. I did a Repair Permissions and that didn't work. They also suggested deleting and reinstalling the software. I did not do that, since other did and it didn't work.


Has anyone had this problem and been able to resolve it?

Thank you. Unfortunately, these solutions don't address my problem. I am able to scan in the ways desscribed in the guide. What I can't do is Scan using the Scan feature on the printer's control panel. The solutions in the guide address scanning by using the computer. The Scan item on the printer's operation panel should allow me to scan an image from there and have it sent to my computer, without having to do anything on my computer.

The linked document states, so I thought it might help.

Although you cannot scan from the printer control panel without a Full Feature driver, you can still scan without the Full Feature HP software installed on your computer by using a basic set of scanning drivers as an alternative. These drivers enable scanning from Apple Preview or Apple Image Capture. You can also scan from the Print & Scan window.

Not doable if:

  • A Full Feature HP driver and software update for your operating system is not available, or your printer released before the HP driver and software update that supports scanning for your printer was released.

I have this same printer; the scan from panel thing works for me with Mavericks.

Maybe if you have previous versions of the software on your Mac you need to delete these first. Maybe with a reset of your print system: OS X Mavericks: Reset the printing system
