That is correct.

iPad 1 is not capable of running anything later than iOS 5.1.1.

How about if it is Jail broken? I just received one and I also can't update or install anything new on it as all the updates need 7.0 running on it...I've read people jail breaking them to get things to work....I might try it if it will work......

We are not allowed to discuss Jailbreaking here.  However you may want to read this though:

You will have to download the incompatible version of the App you want to a computer running iTunes, and then follow the steps in the article above to get the compatible version.

Jailbreaking your device will void your Apple warranty, if any is remaining, as well as any support including the Genius Bar and these forums.

It also opens your device to the possibility of getting a virus and/or malware.

Is there a way to go backwards in iOS versions? Since this update to 5.1.1, it crashes a lot and apps aren't able to install others due to them needing to be compatible with 7.0 iOS. Basically, all I can really do with this thing is surf the web now, I haven't tried watching a movie yet. Before this update, it was running fine. I have done a restore, but looks like I'll have to do another one...I am able to download older versions of some apps, like what is mentioned in your link above. Others I can't install at all....

No, downgrading is not supported.

I Suggest reading the link I posted above. There is a way to get compatible versions of Apps for iOS 5.1.1.  

Also, a restore may fix any issues the update may have caused.  There are thing you can do to try and rectify whatever went wrong with the update.

Thanks Phil! I"m looking into this now. I have one other question. I am giving this iPad to my father. I created him a new Apple ID and account. I wiped the iPad again using iTunes. Now for some reason, any app I try to install gives me a pop up stating that I need to update to iOS 7  and it don't give me an option to download it for 6.0 or earlier. Is this because he is new and never had any apps before? The reason why I ask this is I have had an account before and I just put my User ID on this ipad and was able to install these said apps using the available compatible apps, now I can't install anything unless this thing is updated to 7.0 (which it can't).

I am going to do another restore, in case it didn't take properly the first time.Otherwise, if he is going to use this, I"ll have to have him use my info and just or something....

Update: I restored the iPad again....Still can't get those apps on...so I started to brainstorm......I have an iPod Touch...I am using Firmware vers. 6.1.6....so I have decided to use his Apple ID on the iPod and download whatever he want's there..then I am going over to the iPad and downloading the same there...I am getting all the apps he want's (with a few exceptions) I also enabled the Automatic App Download on both devices....I have no Idea why this works, but it's working...I'm just afraid to update the iPod to 7.0 (if it can even go to that?) and then any app I download or want will give me the option to download an older version????

any ideas???
