I can no longer see my emails sent to me

A day ago all emails can be recieved BUT cannot be viewed in the inbox window?? The count of the emails shows up but no emails are in the inbox.

I was able to find the emails in USERS>MAIL>INBOX but they are a strange "emix" file, so they will not import back into Mail.

I ran all of the usaual software tests... no errors. No HD problems. Permissions OK.

Any ideas???

Thanks Joe

Hi Joe,

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then oen Mail, highlight that particular Inbox & under the Mailbox menu item, choose rebuild.

If still nothing...

Make a new Smart Mailbox that only includes Unread Mails, do they show in that Smartbox?

I agree. All other Mac's here have no problems with email.

No nothing shows up in the new smart mailbox. All emails come in and are counted in mailboxes but cannot be viewed and are not in the inbox window. On these mailboxes I cannot rebuild these as "rebuild" is greyed out????

The new smart mailbox can be rebuilt.

Was thinking about a clean install????

Thanks,

joe

yes it is a pop account. Did call Earthlink. They said they are having a server problem... which make no sense as all of our macs here work fine. The laptop in question is my Mom's (91 years Old). The email program on the laptop seems to be corrupt (???) So... she can email from her G-5 (same OS as the laptop) but NOT the laptop... which seems to narrow it down to something wrong with the laptop mail program.

Clean install???? Joe

Clean Install of Mail, or the OS, or the Mail Account?

If the Mail needs to be saved...

On Mail...

First Quit Mail, then I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.

Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail

Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads

(Could be a different folder here if you chose such in Mail Prefs)

Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist

I am sure it is a corrupt mail program as there are several issues now. (can' see any of the emails, can't delete items in mail, when I do, the deletes "toggle" and change to a grey color (that is a good one!) and do not delete).

So... if there is a way to remove the old email program and install a new one?

Where can I find a new copy of email?

I was thinking of a complete clean install of OS 10.5.8 but have some concerns that corrupt mail settings might be migrated into the clean install.

AND... this last idea to initialize the whole laptop and start over..... a lot of extra work.

THANKS for all of the ideas and hope you'll reply to this with your suggestions.

I sent to above message eariler today.... here is the latest:

All emails showed up in the inbox! ....BUT... clicking on a given email to view, opens a blank window.

Nothing in it! NO TEXT!

I noticed the "rebuild mailbox" drop down was now black (no longer greyed out). Rebuilding the mailbox deletes all emails????

Mail seems to be "offline" at all times? Using the drop down "go online" causes the mail program to "default" right back to "offline".

I wish I could have simple problems!

Hmmm, reinstalling the big 10.5.8 Combo update should replace the Mail App...

Repair Permissions twice in a row afterwords, reboot.

1058 Combo Update, 10.5.8...

http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update

But with the blank window, I'm windering if it might be a Font issue.

In Mail>Preferences>Fonts & Colors, try changing the Message Font to another one & see if text shows up.

Ready for this..... Earthlink did say they had a server issue. EVERYTHING seems to be back to normal!

I thought about that and figured each machine has a IP address, so maybe that is why her machine did not respond and the rest did. That LT was connected to Earthlink's server with the problems......

at least thats what I want to believe!

Thanks for your help.
