Feb 22, 2014 8:16 AM in response to sunsilverby ed2345,★HelpfulDownload the track from the site, and make sure you know where it is on your computer. Then drag it to the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder (which can be found inside you iTunes Media folder).
That will add it to your iTunes library, and you can then sync your iPhone.

You are right to be concerned, since many sites that purport to be sources of free MP3s are just scams and will download crap. However, if you stick to legitimate music download retailers and/or legitimate sources of free tracks, you will not have a problem.
