How do I record through my electric guitar?

I'm having problems recording through my electric guitar to my MacBook Pro (version 10.9.1). I'm using cable to aux input and when I'm playing guitar I can hear it through the speakers. However, when I am recording in GarageBand or Audacity it records from the microphone. I've tried changing the input settings in f. eg. GarageBand, yet it's only picking up sound from the microphone. I've also tried to turn off the microphone by going in System Preferences > Sound, but I don't seem to find anything where you can adjust the audio port.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)
