Why dose my iphone 5s tell me it cannot get mail. it says the connection to the server failed

I have the same issue (Exchange Account). Does this have something to do with the new iOS7 update?
I tried deleting my account and setting it up again, but still, it does not work, and I even lost my CONTACTS as well.
HELP!!!
dont think that ios7 updates have anything to do with it because my iphone was doing this before i updated it.
The Cannot Get Mail error has to do with the ability of the mail client to connect to your mail server. Go into Settings>Mail, and select the account in question. Check the settings for your incoming mail server. Make sure the server name is correct, and that the username and password are correct. You might also want to check to see if you can access the mail from a web client. It could be a problem with the mail provider, not necessarily the phone.
Who is your mail provider?
Your contacts would be a part of your Exchange account, and if you cannot connect to the Exchange account, that would explain why you cannot see contacts. What the exact error that you are seeing? Did this just start? What has your Exchange Administrator say about your account, is everything alright on their end?

Re-check your Exchange account. Did it originally work on the new iPhone 5 or not. It is possible the Exchange account has restrictions on mobile devices and they have to be approved. This can restrict new devices. Since you have already removed and reinstalled the account, your only choice would be to check with the Exchange Administrator.

The issue is with the Exchange accaount. I set it up with my gmail, so that all my contacts could be transfered to my iphone 5.
The server I'm using is "m.google.com". I checked my username and password, but they are both correct.
I tried signing in into my gmail through the web, and it works just fine.
Gmail will no longer work with updated devices. Yu will need to use the Gmail app instead of the iOS mail app.
Then how can I get my contacts transferred to my iPhone from my Gmail account?
As I suggested. Use the Gmail app. It is available in the App store. It will handle your mail and contacts.
