iCloud, iPad and Mail

When I send mail on my iPad using iCloud, there is often a delay of 15 minutes to four hours or more. What would be causing this delay? My network checked out okay. Mail moves quickly on my laptop, because SMTP is set to use my internet provider. Any ideas? Thanks
