My airplay display says no devices detected, however i'm able to use airplay from my iPad and iPhone, but my mac does not detect the apple tv

My environment is completely over Wi-Fi, and I don't have the ability to relocate the router in the same room with the iMac and the Apple TV. I've verified all devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and I'm able to use Airplay from my iPhone and my iPad.

When I look at the Display options in the System Preferences on the iMac, the Airplay Display states No Devices Detected.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

Further details, I'm on a Mid 2011 version of the iMac. and I've restarted and power cycled the ATV. And I've restarted and disconected and reconnected the iMac from the Wi-Fi network. I've also referenced the standard support pages http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5404 and http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4215. I also do not have the firewall on the iMac.
