My touch pad does not work.

My ipod nano touch pad has not been working for the past two months. I charge it on my computer, the charging symbol appears and then the do not disconnect symbol appears. When I disconnect it, it is on and working but I cannot search through my folders or songs because my touch pad does not work. The only way to make my nano respond is to either push the hold button back and forth or to plug it into my computer. Can anyone please help me?
