I am just wondering what the beta means? I have a Mac pro w/ retina and an icloud account with iworks for icloud beta. Do I need to purchase iworks again to have all of the benefits? Is Beta just a starter version until I buy the one in the mac app store?

Beta means that the software is still in the public testing phase. We have the honor of using it and are supposed to report problems found to Apple (there are feedback icons in the iCloud UI).
The iCloud version, which is executed by a web browser only, is free to iCloud users. You can create and edit iWorks documents and download them for local editing or printing. You can also open and edit the files with the latest OSX iWork applications that run on OS X 10.9.x (Mavericks) only.
Thank you! Also, Should I go to the Mac App Store and purchase the suite/bundle? Or is this giving me the same thinkg that I already have. I don't see that my osx Mavericks specifically came with iworks apps. I only see them when I log into icloud?

If you are happy with the iCloud (web) version of these tools then you don't need anything else.
Note that if you were using iWork Mac applications in the past they are still on your Mac system - the Mavericks upgrade did not remove them. For example, Pages.app would still be in the /Applications folder.
I have only used the Beta apps that were already there when I signed into my icloud account. I never went in and bought iwork for mac. I searched pages.app and there was nothing.

Note that iWork for iCloud beta cannot be used from an iOS device like an iPad or iPhone. If you want to use Pages on one of those, you must get the app from the app store.
I do have Pages & Numbers purchased for my iOS devices. Can I open an iCloud beta numbers spreadsheet on my iPad? If so, how? All I see is that I can share a numbers sheet on the iPad "to" iCloud, not open "from."

Numbers for iCloud beta is an app which can be used by a Mac or PC via a browser. If you create a spreadsheet using that app, it should automatically appear in the documents of your Numbers app in your iPad. If someone else creates a spreadsheet using that app on their Mac or PC, I think they could email the doc or send you a link to it so you could download a copy.
Thanks Tom - that's what I was expecting. However, the sheet I created on my MacPro using iCloud numbers beta is not showing up on the iPad. And, yes, I do have iCloud enabled for documents, including numbers. I even tried turning numbers sync off and back on. The desktop version does not a
Pear.

It works right for me, don't know what could cause it to not be available to your ipad. Do you have the same issue with pages and keynote?
Ok - feel a tad silly but, never had the "Share Numbers Data on iCloud" turned on in Settings on my iPad. It took 30 minutes with Apple support to figure out that stupid oversight on my part.
