applied security patch on POP3 server, now can't pop mail

Yesterday I applied the Aug 1st security patch on the Mac (10.4.7 -PPC) that is my POP3 server, and since then I can't POP mail off the Mac. I've tried Apple's Mail and Eudora, neither of which get it.

If I ssh to the POP server and use "mail" I see ~ 140 new messages (with an "N") beside them), including stuff I've mailed out this morning. I deleted the ~ 1100 old undeleted messages, and it didn't help.

I also notice that the message I get in the shell is "you have mail" not "you have new mail"

If I telnet to the POP3 port and issue the commands by hand I get this:

+OK Qpopper (version 4.0.5) at faranth.ci.uiuc.edu starting.
USER fligor
+OK Password required for fligor.
PASS *******
+OK fligor has 0 visible messages (0 hidden) in 0 octets.
quit

so I don't think that the problem is on my client side, but on the server.

did the path for mail files change so that my popper software isn't looking in the right place perhaps? anyone have other ideas?

I did run the permissions utility and didn't find any problems.

thanks for any ideas.
