calendar invitations from an unknown party.

Yesterday evening I received three calendar invitations from someone I don't know. How did this happen and how can I prevent this? And more to the point, how can I delete the invitations WITHOUT sending information to the interloper?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.2)
