Q: My Airport Extreme intermittently shuts down completely.

My Airport Extreme (newest model) will shut down completely, all by itself, with the green light completely off.  When I unplug and replug the device, it starts again and the green light comes back on after it boots.  It's as if a "circuit breaker" cuts off the power.  No other equipment shuts off, so it's not the electric outlet.

It is still faulty.. there is no way a router should shut itself down when modem and other network devices are not.. the power supply in the Extreme is flakey.. return it and keep returning it until you get a good one.. or get refund and buy another brand that doesn't fall over daily.

i am not sure if i can get a refund. i think its shutting down cause of overheating maybe.

does this happen to the new time capsule as well?

Yes, the TC when they are faulty overheat.. otherwise it should not even get warm.

I replaced mine twice and finally gave up and bought an Asus 87U router. There's clearly a problem with these Airport Extreme routers.

I've left many an Airport running for years.  Often they go more than a year without any sort of attention.

So historically, Airports have been excellent quality.  I would be surprised if the new ones are worse.  I think you got a bad unit.  Maybe you suffered an electrical surge?

Does everyone of us over here with the exact same problem have to blame a power surge and not the apple product? Dont we have other gadgets and decices plugged in to the same powerline?

THis is a clear design flaw and spple doesnt want to fix it.

everyone huh?  you sure about that.

At which point did you decide I was blaming a power surge?  Was it  before, or after I said he probably got a bad unit?  Re-read the post and then go crawl back into whatever hole you came from.

Same  shut down problem. Unit powers off after 15 hrs or so. Checked good power supply. No overheating noted.  Returned unit. Checking new unit.

just to keep this thread alive.

Changed extreme 2 times now for completely new. already wanting to return it completely.

First time i get dissapointed of Apple quality and I really can see that network appliances are not the best. Even though i have an airport express somewhere in the house that always works.

the store is now of course blaiming something in my house for this, because they cannot reproduce it *duh*. I cannot either of course, it just happens. Last time i filmed it with my cell how i just removed and then re-plugged the router just to show electricity existed.

I spend tooooo much time on these quality issues and i would gladly keep the router if it works, or i'll be forced to buy asus even if they are the ugliest thing existing

Now using my old dlink dir-825 which just works.. everyday all the time no problem. but slow wifi...well, we'll see if what the store does. I've had 3 different extreme routers within 2 months, thats extreme.

I have the same problem.  Bought a new Airport Extreme gen 6.  It shuts off (status light is dark) approximately every 2 days.  It seems to happen around 7-8pm right after I get home from work.  I exchanged it for a new one and two days later the new one is doing the same thing.  My previous Airport Extreme gen 4 has worked perfectly for two years.  I'm going to get my money back and stick with my gen 4.

I bought a refurbished AE from the Apple Store Dec 2014 and it worked fine for about 3 months. Last month I experienced the same shut down issue three times in a week: Light goes out, unplug and plug back in to get it working again. I contacted Apple and I received a replacement (that's another story). The new AE was OK for a couple of weeks and then shut down one evening. The next morning, the Apple CSR I got through to put me in touch with a supervisor...A nice fellow who said he would ship me a third AE. He said he would be speak to an engineer about this issue as well.

I received the new AE a couple of days later and shortly afterward the supervisor called me with follow up. He said the engineer told him the issue was most likely "environmental", not the units themselves (???).  That is puzzling to me...The environment is my tidy, air conditioned office in NE Florida. My previous AE was a second gen model that worked flawlessly for years in the same environment.

    We'll see what happens next.

Having the same issue, also with my 2nd, latest model AEBS.  It is inconceivable that Apple engineering is unaware of this problem and why it is occurring. I've run electronics, including an Airport Express, off the same surge protector for 5 years.  Something is wrong with the power supply within the AEBS.  Apple should man up, recall ALL these units and give loyal users a full refund.
