Hello,
I've found all of my Macs actually like Wal-Mart's "Durabrand" CD-R disks. Never had one of them fail to burn yet.
I've used them in all of the systems listed in my details below. And, I've also used them on two iMac G5 systems (a revision A and a revision B) that I used to own.
I've also had pretty good luck with other generic disks that are CD-R type.
Now, for DVD-R media, the machines are far more particular.
I have had poor results using DVD-R media of the generic type (such as the same Wal-Mart brand). But, I've had 100% success with Verbatim, Maxell, and Memorex.
As for build quality, it is visually obvious that the Verbatim brand disks are built to more exacting standards. The Memorex and Maxell (and generic) DVD-R disks have more physical imperfections in their appearance. You can tell that their adhesion process is less refined when they actually glue the many layers together.
But, I've never had any trouble using them. But, if you want something that will be most likely to last and burn without trouble, then you should probably stick with the Verbatim brand disks.
I've used Verbatim since the early Apple II days. And, while I've also used many other brands along the way, I've always found Verbatim's media to be flawless. Even some of the 20-year old disks I've had are still working perfectly fine (and that's impressive for magnetic media).
I hope this helps.
