Migration Assistant

How long should it take for the MacBook to find a pc while using the migration assistant? It has been looking for 20 minutes, is that normal?

No it is not. Do yourself a big favor and forget Migration Assistant. Just copy your personal files to an external drive and then copy them from that to your new Mac.

There is nothing else on your Windows computer that will work on a Mac. No programs, settings or options.

The external can be formatted in any way as Mac OS X can Read from Windows NTFS formatted drives. So once you copy your personl files to it on the PC just move it to the Mac and you will be able to COPY, Not move, them to the Mac.

Yes sure that is what most external drive are. They connect to a USB port. If you are talking about a USB Thumb drive, Stick, then that can be used also if it is big enough and or you move, copy, somethings then delete them from the thumb drive to add more things.

I do not have an external hard drive. But, this is sounding like a better option. Can I just do the same thing with a USB drive?
