"gotofail" issue or SSL Security Issue
Does the current "gotfail" or SSL security issue affect my 1st generation iPad? I have iOS 5.1.1 and that is as far as it will go.

Apple has not said anything about updating iOS 5.1.1 for added SSL security. And the issue really will not be a problem, or potential problem, unless using unsecure public WiFi networks. The flaw permits Man-in-the-middle eavesdropping on a transmission, not entry to the device. If you stay on a secure network which has point-of-origin encryption the significance of this drops a great deal.
If you do not attach to a public WiFi such as a coffee shop or fast foot place where there is unrestricted access there is less to worry about. And be careful, in all cases, about sending sensitive info on a wireless network that is not your own...info such as bank accounts, credit card numbers, etc.
