thanks everyone ... but what does airplane mode do?
Airplane mode turns of all radio transmit/receive functionality.
Turning off WiFi, well turns of just WiFi.
Do not disturb, prevents calls and text messages from arriving at the phone. All transmit/receive functionality remains on in this mode.

No - DND does not shut of the device's WiFi signal.
Do not disturb will allow you to still use wifi
Whereas if you turning of wifi you can't
Airplane mode turns off everything that effect electronics of plane
