How do you make a partition modifiable that says it can't be modified?

When I first set up Windows 7, I gave it way too much of my mac's memory. Now I want to lower the amount of memory it has, but it says it cannot be modified. I can only erase the disk. How do I make it so I can modify the amount of space on my Windows disk without erasing it and redownloading it.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8), Worried about my battery life.

If you haven't mucked it up then open Boot Camp Assistant which you used to create the partition, then use it to remove the partition. You cannot change the partition size using Disk Utility. You can try using Camptune X 10.4. But if it doesn't work, then you need to repartition the entire drive.
