It would help to give us more information. Etresoft: EtreCheck is a free app developed by one of the contributors to this forum which will generate a system report on your computer. If you can paste the report here we can take a look and see what might be the problem.
I use CS5 and CS6 daily. No lag with either. I also run VMs all day long.
Post EtreCheck results as recommended.
Thank you for your quick reply. Following is the EtreCheck report:

THAT is the first thing I'd change.
4Gb is a bare minimum for OS10.7, 10.8 or 10.9.
8Gb would be better - 16Gb best, especially if you're running things like Photoshop, AfterEffects, InDesign, Encore or Premiere.

Those kernel extensions are from Tiger and Leopard. That can't be good. See if there is an update or remove them.

That's curious. Why is Java invalid? I suggest uninstalling Java and reinstalling it.

Java again. Plus there is an awful lot of stuff from LogmeIn running. I don't know if it is causing any problems but it might be a good idea to uninstall it and see how it runs. If there is no obvious change, then LogmeIn is innocent and you should reinstall the latest version. If there is a change, then reinstalling the latest version might fix the problem.

Safari is quite the memory hog. Normally it runs fine with 4 GB of RAM, but if you are running both Safari and Adobe (itself a huge memory hog) from login items, then you probably do need more RAM.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Thank you for your suggestion. After updating to OS X 10.9.2 and uninstalling Logmein, things improved with little to no sluggish performance. I launched the console, copied and pasted the last handful of lines of copy and pasted here immediately after having problems with Photoshop's functionality as you requested: Any feedback is appreciated.

Having quite a time fixing slow/non responsive iMac. Have been through most of these posts, have run the etrecheck today, and will post below most of that report. Any help greatly appreciated. Activity monitor shows nothing obvious. System is just terribly slow, even in safe and normal modes. Thanks.
My iMac/OSX 10.9.1 is very sluggish. I'm using CS6 and Safari daily. Is this normal?
