HP No Longer Supports Deskjet 3050 J610 in Maverick.

I found out today in talking to a HP Customer Service Rep, that they are no longer going to support the HP Deskject 3050 with updated drivers. This is quite unfortunate because this printer is less then 2 years old and is still very functional. In fact, there are a number of apps that require an HP printer only that I won't be able to use any longer (one being Grocery IQ, one of my favs). As a FYI, the printer can still be used plugged in via USB, but I can no longer get it to connect itself to my wireless network. It was working initially with Maverick but I made the mistake of having to change the name of my network for security reasons and when I did that, it wouldn't connect to the network again I literally spent hours trying to get it to work. I un-installed and reinstalled software, etc. The most recent software (downloaded from the Apple website that is suppose to support Maverick) crashes in an attempt to set the printer up. I even tried it on another of my Macs with the same crash problem. I did talk to an Applecare advisor who tried to help me but we weren't successful and that's why I ended up calling HP. Apple was even kind enough to call me back to follow up and the advisor was very surprised at the position HP has taken. I've always been partial to Epson but bought the HP for use in a couple of instances where I needed their printer. Based on this, I won't be purchasing another HP printer any time soon. I wanted to get this out to the Apple Support Community just in case someone else was having the same problems as I was. Reply if you have any questions.

This worked for me with my HP printer:

  1. uninstall all HP apps and "utilities"
  2. go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Print
    1. control-click on your printer in the column on the left
    2. select "Reset Printing System..." and "reset" in the dialog that follows
  3. do a factory reset on your printer. You'll have to consult the printer manual for how.
  4. power down everything: modem, router, computer, and printer
  5. power up each item in turn in the same order: modem, router, computer, and printer. Let each power up completely before moving on to the next
  6. enter your wifi password in your printer so it can connect to the network
  7. go back to printers & scanners and it should see your printer and download a driver for it from Apple

arthur, thanks again for your reply. As I reviewed your process, #6 is not applicable to my model in that you don't enter your network password directly on the printer itself, it's a function of the set-up done on the computer through the software. I am going to try reloading the software and setting it up again now that I've reset the printer back to the factory settings in hopes maybe that will help.

All others, if you have any additional advise/input on this subject, let me know.

Brilliant, thanks for that. I was about to trash my perfectly good HP 3050 for airprint but still had my old HP laptop and this worked a treat.

In my case the printer seemed to all work fine with Mavericks then Yosemite came along and still worked OK until Virgin gave me a new superhub 2ac then I had to switch the printer off and on each time I wanted to use it then after a few days the printer lost its wireless connection and just wouldn't reconnect and I was down to a usb connection to print. Happy now 🙂

PS: This exercise reminded me how cr@p PCs actually are!!!!
