Accessibility: Captions just appeared

How do I turn off captions on my MacBook Air? There is no on/off option. This is not for TV or videos or anything, just general mail, internet, etc.

OS X version?

System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing > VoiceOver

Select "Off".

or

System Preferences > Accessibility > VoiceOver

Uncheck the box beside "Enable VoiceOver".

OS 10.9.1......but the problem resolved on it's on as mysteriously as it appeared. Thanks for your help, but curious how VoiceOver (which was not on) would solve the caption issue. Is it all interconnected?
