Why can't I insert a screen shot into a discussion?

I was just replying to a question and thought it would be easier to use Grab to make a screen shot. When I tried to insert it (using the little camera icon), I got this message:

[The content type of this image is not allowed.]

Huh? It's only 143 KB, so it's not bigger than the 2 MB limit. The file type is TIFF.

I see other posts with screen shots...what's the deal?

iMovie '11, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), iMovie 9.0.9

I think the file type is the issue. Try using jpg.

The forum software will accept images in .jpg, .gif, .png and .bmp formats. These are normally uploaded to the servers so that they can be viewed by other users. There is however a ongoing glitch which seems to prevent images being shown to some users in some cases when instead there will just be a placeholder. Such images may be visible on one visit, and not on another. If you have access to a personal website or a service like dropbox you can place an image at a publicly visible URL and use a standard <img> tag in the html editor to include it in a post.

For instance <img src="http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/bookorder5.png" /> becomes:

User uploaded file

I have abandoned Grab altogether because of the mere hassle of converting filetypes... the only advantages Grab really had was the preference (ONLY preference, BTW) of picking a Cursor to appear with the shot AND the Timed Screen option so you can pull a menu and show your selection WITH the proper cursor - I actually do use Grab for the latter once in a blue moon.

I primarily use two methods... one for 'No annotation required' and one for 'Annotated'

No Annotation Required

= OS X Built-in (from Finder > Menu > Help > Mac Help? > search "screenshot")

*Formatting changed as Copy/Paste loses the table format*

Shortcuts for taking pictures of the screen

Use these shortcuts to take pictures of the screen in Mac OS X.

Action > Shortcut

Take a picture of the whole screen > ⌘-Shift-3

Take a picture of part of the screen > ⌘-Shift-4, then drag to select the area you want in the picture.

To cancel, press Escape.

Take a picture of a window, a menu, the menu bar, or the Dock. > Press ⌘-Shift-4, then press the Space bar. Move the pointer over the area you want so that it's highlighted, then click.

To drag to select the area instead, press the Space bar again. To cancel, press Escape.

Screen shots are saved as files on the desktop. If you want to put the screen shot in the Clipboard, rather than create a file, hold down the Control key when you press the other keys. You can then paste the picture into a document.

CCC's note... If you want an elegant shot of a Window or dialog, switch to a Clean Background - an new/empty browser window with no background garbage. This yields a shot with neat-o drop shadow over white BG. For example:

User uploaded file

Annotation Required

= Requirements = Firefox Browser & Awesome Screenshot Add-on (Get Add-ons in Firefox Add-ons dialog page)

  1. Captures 'visible part' of page OR 'Full Page'
  2. Annotations available (w/ hover tool-tip prompts)
    1. Crop
    2. Rectangle
    3. Oval
    4. Arrowed line
    5. Straight Line
    6. Free line
    7. Blur
    8. Text
    9. Color picker
    10. Undo

User uploaded file

Save options =

  1. Formats = PNG & JPG
  2. Locations
    1. Temporary online
    2. Permanent online
    3. Finder location (standard 'Save As' dialog)

Isn't it strange that an Apple product - Grab.App - is useless here?

This may not be exactly on point, but you will get a similar (if not the same) message if you paste a URL to an external link to a FILE such as a DropBox location of an image. I will use a random example to illustrate...

https://www.dropbox.com/s/fl8hdqfkvo7qkeh/Picture%205.png?dl=0

Here is the exact error message displayed(at the bottom of the visible page - goes away after ±5 seconds) when I paste the URL

If you are plagued with the 'non-displaying image' glitch using any of the supported filetypes mentioned here (as many here are), consider a DropBox or other cloud-like service for mission critical screenshots. Another advantage is you can put other documents there as well that cannot be attached in this forum.

good afternoon (night to you) my friend,

since we are experimenting...

  1. same URL without the " ?dl=0 " at the end
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/fl8hdqfkvo7qkeh/Picture%205.png
result = same alert & no image in the compose pane
  2. same image moved to Public DropBox folder (using Finder's contextual menu > [DropBox] > Share Dropbox link )
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/ytaf5b91qje7y6f/Picture%205.png?dl=0
result = same alert & no image in the compose pane
  3. Same as #2, but after
    User uploaded file
and navigating to the Public folder and display the image (NOT in the LightBox, just normal)
Copy/Paste the URL from the location bar
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/fl8hdqfkvo7qkeh/Picture%205.png
result = same alert & no image in the compose pane
  4. at DropBox website, there is no way to Control+click a normal contextual menu - DropBox is over-riding - only option is to 'Download' which invokes the browser's Save?Open? dialog
  5. pour la postérité, la capture d'écran de la fenêtre DropBoxUser uploaded file

I needed to put the image in Dropbox/Public, the context menu then offered me "Copy public link" which is the URL I used above. It has a slightly different form from those you've been playing with. This bit is the address of my public folder https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/26649283 but you can't view the contents of the folder, only access specific files if you know their filenames.

I may have made a false assumption regarding the "Public-NESS" of the folder I am using in this experiment...

I have two DB accounts & therefore 'Locations" within the DB domain - one Public by default & one Private by default.

I have a folder on the Public one "Shared" to my Private one - where I took the latter part of the experimental URLs and options from the Shared/Public folder (really an alias-Mac / shortcut-PC ??). I will investigate further...
