Q: Airplay mirroring broke in 10.9.2

i just updated to 10.9.2 and now when i try and airplay mirror to my Apple TV, it sends the audio but just shows a black screen and i can't drag anything to it. It doesn't show any of the options for external displays in the displays section of System Preferences.

Any ideas? i tried reapplying the combo update with no luck

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

From my experience you need to uninstall either AirParrot or Air Display from Avatron.

There might be other apps that also cause this issue. In all cases they're related to some screen extending/mirroring options. So look out for apps in this category.

In addition to the last post: I myself experienced the problem with a leftover of 'screenrecycler'. After removing ScreenRecyclerDriver.kext from /system/library/extensions airplay works again as expected. (the program was not actively installed anymore - probably the uninstall didn't cleanup all components)

The installed version probably dated from the pre-Mavericks era (and even from my old computer) so i'm not sure if a more recent version of the program causes the same problems

Thanks to all contributers who pointed me towards the right direction !

For me, the problem was AirDisplay. Ran the uninstall script (simply quitting the app from the taskbar doesn't work), mirroring from iMac to Apple TV working ok again.

For me, it was Splashtop streamer. Uninstalling and restarting did it for me.

my Airplay works flawlessly at times.  Other times i try to use it and it won't let me.  I reboot my Mac Mini and then it will work again.  Any ideas?  I've never downloaded AirParrot or any stuff like that.

This solved my problem! For me, it was the AirDisplay app!

    Thanks!!!

    Ah ha.

So in addition the removal process for the AirParrot kexts, people still experiencing the issue should also look to remove AirDisplay components. According to the uninstaller script provided by AirDisplay, the responsible kexts for causing the issues are:

    /System/Library/Extensions/AVFrameBuffer.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/AVVideoCard.kext

You can (and should) run the uninstaller to cleanly clear any components from AirDisplay that are left, but to verify you can run these commands in Terminal yourself:

    sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AVFrameBuffer.kext

    sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AVVideoCard.kext

    Restart and then try again.

I am grateful to J Rose, simply spotlight search AirPlay uninstaller click on it, automatic restart and AirPlay is restored, why Apple didn't tell us this I don't know but there it is and I am very happy.

I did not/do not have Air Parrot or any other kinds of parrot installed this solution is quick clean and it works very Apple.

Some great posts here. For me troubleshooting was on a clean install of Mavericks. No migration from another machine. Black screen on TV but I had sound. Tested in a new user and the issue persisted. Have never had AirParrot installed. It appeared that a lot of people had luck removing third party extensions. I went through my apps and uninstalled all display related apps.  The issue persisted. Tried a safe boot, no change. I decided to complete a Mavericks install over top of my existing OS and it completed with an incompatible software message for an iOS apps Mac extension. Display Pad is incompatible with Mavericks. Updated to 10.9.2 and airplay has returned.

I've never used the AirDisplay App or AirParrot and AirPlay recently stopped working for me, too.

    Platform Info:

    * I have _no_ third party apps for display mirroring.  Never tried them.

    * I have a brand new iMac27.  It's only two weeks old.  It was working fine and stopped within the last day or two.

    * I have late 2011 Macboo Pro that has worked for about a month.  It won't work now.

    * I have tried an iPhone 4S and it doesn't work.

    * I'm using a wired Ethernet connection to both my iMac and AppleTV.

    * I'm using Wifi on my MBP.

    * Both iMac27 and MBP are on 10.9.2

    Behavior Info:

    * Sometimes AirPlay works, but usually it won't.

    * All platforms seem to fail in the same manner: try to connect, timeout, and give up.  AirPlay "availability" follows the AppleTV AirPlay "enable/disable" setting quickly and accurately, but ultimately, no connection can be made.

    * I have tried rebooting my iMac and Apple TV multiple times.  Both on their own and together.  It doesn't help.

    * When I select Airplay from the menu bar, the icon lights up, nothing seems to happen for a while, then I eventually get a "Could not connect to Apple TV" dialog.

    * Communication between the two boxes seems solid in some ways.  The AirPlay icon goes comes and goes quickly and accurately as I enable/disable Airplay on my Apple TV.

    Summary:

I'm kinda wondering if an Apple TV update is to blame?  My Apple TV is on automatic upgrades.  It is only a month or so old and I only use it for AirPlay.

I got things working again by switching my AppleTV to Wifi instead of Ethernet.

    Hi Everyone,

I was very concerned about upgrading to Mavericks with all the problems people have had, so I wanted to share my experience.

I just upgraded my mid-2011 MBA (11-inch) to Mavericks 10.9.2 today and had no problems whatsoever. I upgraded from 10.7.5.

The upload took roughly 3.5 hours. Even though I have AirParrot, I was able to use Apple TV/Airplay mirroring without any issues. I didn't even have to uninstall AirParrot.

Also, I read a comment on another board about someone having trouble when mirroring with an HDMI cable after upgrading to Mavericks. I can still do this as well.

Not sure if Apple has made more updates recently, but based on my experience so far, I'm glad I did the upgrade.

For me the problem was solved by uninstalling Air Display from Avatron through their uninstall application.

I am another who had not installed or used AirParrot or DisplayPad.  But after reading all of these posts it seemed clear that something abut 10.9.2 does not work with other programs well.  I reviewed my extensions and found something called DisplayLink.  I do not recall where it came from, buy decided to uninstall it and remove the extensions.  After doing so, Airplay has seemed to return to normal.  Thought I would post in case anyone else happens to have DisplayLink.

O.K. I am running 10.9.2 on my mid 2011 imac 21 inch. I tried the manual air parrot removal in the terminal utilites screen but nothing worked for my black screen update issue. After a few restarts and router resets I ran the 10.8 removal tool from air parrots page posted in earlier replies. It worked.

    Hopefully this helps.

    Hi,

I had exactly the same problem and it was DisplayPad that was causing the problem for me. I uninstalled it by doing the following and all worked fine afterwards.

    1. Disable DisplayPad from launching on Startup

    2. Delete the following items (if they exist):

              /System/Library/Extensions/SSFramebuffer.kext/

              /System/Library/Extensions/DisplayPadFramebuffer.kext/

              /System/Library/Extensions/DisplayPadDriver.kext/

    3. Reboot

    All back to normal!

    Hope this helps somebody.

    Thanks,

    John
