Q: Airplay mirroring broke in 10.9.2

i just updated to 10.9.2 and now when i try and airplay mirror to my Apple TV, it sends the audio but just shows a black screen and i can't drag anything to it. It doesn't show any of the options for external displays in the displays section of System Preferences.

Any ideas? i tried reapplying the combo update with no luck

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

i assume it brought back whatever was causing the issue. i might go back to when i was on 10.9.1 and update again to 10.9.2 and see if it does it again.

Its reeeally painful to start over fresh and bring over everything. i hate all the Settings that get lost

Yeah I'm having the same issue since upgrading to 10.9.2. Not sure if it's a problem with my iMac or with the Apple TV. Hopefully Apple will issue a fix for one or the other soon.

I am so glad I finally found this thread, I thought it was just me but it seems we have a problem caused by 10.9.2 upgrade. I have all the identical symptoms though unfortunately I spent many hours trouble shooting before I got here.

Airplay works fine with all mobile devices so i guess we have to wait for apple to respond to this I hope someone up the chain is reading this thread as it clearly is an issue that needs to be resolved.

Thanks again every one I love this Apple community approach to problems.

If someone of you has contracted an Apple Protection Plan for an iMac or Macbook, please call the Technical Support to introduce the problem. Maybe nobody in Apple is listening here. I'm still using Airparrot with no longer problems, actually I have found it works better than Airplay (streaming video from the Internet with an iMac and sending to AppleTV)

I have the same issue using iMac 21inch, just updated to 10.9.2 and now mirroring display wont select through Apple TV onto our TV. This all worked no problems before. I cant slect 'Mirror iMac' instead of 'Extend Desktop'. I will try AirParrot later instead as a temporary fix.

Do all of you who are experiencing this issue have AirParrot installed?

Reports are that a fresh installation of Mavericks and update to 10.9.2 fixes the issue, which means it is being caused by something user-installed. The first thing to try would be to create a test-user account and see if the issue persists. If so, then the issue is system-wide and not isolated to a particular user's account/home folder. Otherwise I would suggest doing a safe-boot to see if the issue stops. If so, then it is a likely a kernel extension or launch agent/daemon causing the issue. You can view kernel extensions in /System/Library/Extensions, although be aware that removing extensions that are vital to the system can require you to reinstall the OS, so be careful about what you remove. If you notice any third party extensions (such as one belonging to AirParrot), try pulling it out to the desktop, restarting and testing. The same thing can be tried at /Library/LaunchAgents or /Library/LaunchDaemons for apps that may be starting upon boot/login and causing the issue.

Please post your findings here so others can try and build off of it.

I would agree. I don't use AirParrot/never installed it, but use AirServer and I have no issues here.

    I'm on an iMac 27 late 2012

2.9 GHz Intel Core i5  and I'm able to connect to my Apple TV via Airplay but now sometimes when I'm streaming from the computer it stops the stream randomly and goes back to the internal programs set on the Apple TV and I have to re establish the link on the computer. Most annoying since Mavericks fixed a lot of problems with Airplay that existed in prior OS

yes i do have Airparrot installed (not running though),  i ran onyx after restoring my data to the fresh install of 10.9.2 to try and clean out anything that could have been the issue. i did not check the dameons or extensions. Will try uninstalling Airparrot and report back in a few hours once i'm home

Awesome. Yes even though it isn't "running" the driver/kext may be loaded and causing a conflict with the driver that Mac OS uses for AirPlay. So just being present in /System/Library/Extensions can cause the issue.

I have AirParrot installed at home so I can test too, but I won't be able to post results for some time...

Using AirPlay on iMac 27 inch, iMac 21.5 inch amd MacBook Air (all running 10.9.2) connected to 3 AppleTVs (2xATV2 and 1xATV3). No problems whatsoever. After updating, I did have to restart every ATV to get them to connect using AirPlay. Before restarting, in each case they dropped the connection within a minute or two of selection on the iMacs. No AirParrot installation, past or present.

Confused here... you say "no problems whatsoever" and then say you had to restart all of your AppleTVs to get it to work. That sounds like a problem.

I'm assuming people have tried restarting their AppleTVs? If not, could people experiencing the issue try restarting them and see if the issue is resolved?

Sorry to confuse you. My point was that the hardware/software is running with no problems whatsoever. The restart was my oversight as I believe it is pretty much standard to restart all connected hardware after an update.

The more people that report this to Apple, the more likely it will get to Engineering so that an update can be created. If you have trouble after an update, regardless if you have the APP or are in warranty, you should be able to call and get assistance.

I used to work for Apple, MikeT3Com. For some reason many people think Apple actually watches these forums and listens to error reports. They will not pursue this one since it is clearly caused by third-party content. So feel free to submit your bug reports, but I guarantee I (or someone non-Apple) will find the issue and a fix before they do.
