Why isn't there an option to use a credit card or a redeemed gift card balance

I have had an itunes account for years and use a credit card for my purchases. I received an itunes gift card and redeemed it but the itunes store does not give me the option to use my redeemed balance and automatically cahrges my credit card. How do I use the redeemed balance?
