Q: iPhone contacts lost

Why did my husband's iPhone suddenly stop displaying contacts?  Prevention?  Cure?  I had him turn off the phone.  Soon after he turned it back on the contacts reappeared. My names of favorites are missing

iPhone 4, iOS 7.0.6
