Is there a way for dummies to connect a music keyboard to garageband to record? I thought I could use a quarter inch to USB cable but apparently it's not that simple!

It may be just that easy. What keyboard and quarter inch to usb cable are you using?
You need a USB keyboard, like a Line 6 MobileKeys, or various others. The connection is USB out of the keyboard to USB into your computer.
I have an older Triton workstation. It doesn't have a USB connection on the back. It has a 50 pin SCSI connector. Thanks.

I bought a TrackLink keyboard/guitar to USB interface 1/4 in TS to USB Type A cable. Packaging says plug and play - no driver required.
What you have is a Audio interface and you will need do is. First choose the interface in Garageband > Preferences > Audio Midi and make it your input. Then you will need a Audio track. Click on the track so it's highlighted and should turn on track monitoring and you should heard the keyboard now.
There must be some setting in the Triton that I don't know about. I went to audio Midi and it was already on input. The other option to choose was USB PnP sound device. Tried that just for grins and it didn't work either. Could it be that there's some sort of software that I have to install? Thanks.
USB PnP (Plug an Play) sounds like the right input. Are you using a audio track and did you select the input channel and are you sure the track is record enabled?
Where my audio input is "Fast Track", yours should be your TrackLink or any other analog-input to digital converter.
Make an audio track with whatever effects on it, or none. With your A-to-D converter selected in prefs, your audio track selected, with monitoring turned on, you should be hearing the keyboard's own sounds.

If what you want to do is record the line-out audio of some instrument, a guitar, a keyboard, a bass... you need an A to D converter, maybe not a MIDI interface.
A device like M-Audio's M-Track will take an XLR or phone jack audio input from a mic, or any instrument with audio out... and convert it to a digital signal that can be recorded on an audio track. These devices are usually plug and play and will just show up to be selected in GarageBand Audio/MIDI preferences.
Rubicondo, he states his Tracklink is 1/4" TS to USB.
There are these additional instructions in TrackLink's own FAQ... setting the input globally in System Preferences, possibly in addition to setting them in GarageBand?

Well, what do you know folks? After ALL of that it turns out the new cable I bought was defective! I stopped by Music World earlier today to ask questions, they plugged everything in and it didn't work for them either! I REALLY appreciate all of the help. As usual, it's the simplest solution.
