garageband help

Is there a way for dummies to connect a music keyboard to garageband to record? I thought I could use a quarter inch to USB cable but apparently it's not that simple!

OK. let's revise that... the TrackLink is a MIDI to USB interface. Here's a thread on this topic... https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3100645

If what you want to do is record the line-out audio of some instrument, a guitar, a keyboard, a bass... you need an A to D converter, maybe not a MIDI interface.

A device like M-Audio's M-Track will take an XLR or phone jack audio input from a mic, or any instrument with audio out... and convert it to a digital signal that can be recorded on an audio track. These devices are usually plug and play and will just show up to be selected in GarageBand Audio/MIDI preferences.

There are these additional instructions in TrackLink's own FAQ... setting the input globally in System Preferences, possibly in addition to setting them in GarageBand?

Mac OS 10.3.9+ Setup Procedure

1. Go to Apple Menu>System Preferences and click Sound
2. Click the “Input” tab
3. Select “Guitar to USB Interface”
4. Click the “Output” tab
5. Select your desired playback option

6. Close window
