Why can't Apple post the model numbers, or Machine Identifiers for requirements? How is one to really know which model of Mac they have? It might have been right on the edge. Come on Apple.

If you are going to post requirements, you need to be more specific. Early this year or late that year? What if the machine was on the bubble? It is not like you put those descriptors on the box, so spell them out in the system requirements.

If you do not know if your Mac meets the requirements, do the simplest thing: open the Mac App Store and try to download OS X Mavericks. If your computer is supported, the Mavericks download will start. If your computer is not supported, the Mac App Store will show an error.

Also, since OS X Lion, you can see what Mac model you have and without identifying the model number. Just open  > About this Mac > More Info, and you will see the year of your Mac and if it is an Early, Mid or Late computer model. However, this does not apply to Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

Because Apple dropped model numbers altogether. They are identified by model and year now. They still maintain a part number, but that isn't visible anywhere as far as I can tell.

There are pages for the different types of Mac, like this one for the iMac: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1758
