MBP - OSX 10.9.2 - running crushingly slow with other symptoms.

My MBP is crushingly slow. I have also had some graphics issues and other strange issues like mission control not working properly, or app icons not displaying in launchpad. Memory used in activity monitor is always hovering around 7.98 GB out of 8GB... so that's obviously part of the problem.... but as I write this the only apps I have opened are: Activity Monitor and Safari.... and it's currently running 7.99GB.

Under activity monitor this item is consistantly red and non responsive "com.apple.photostream-agent.ImageConversionService (not responding)". In the past I have noticed other items non-responsive items in Activity Monitor.

Attempted solutions: I made a couple different admin users to test out if it was something with a particular account. But all accounts had the same symptoms. I did a clean install just a couple days ago and used migration assistant to bring over only data related to my user... ie... photos, music, emails, documents, etc. I did not re-install any applications other than a few mac app store purchases, like aperature, pages, keynote, numbers. No 3rd party apps. (up until 5 minutes ago when I installed dropbox... but the problem was there prior to installing this app.)

Any help would be super appreciated. Thank you.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Thx Linc Davis!

The following information came up... and there seems to be a repeating error here. Currently my memory is running at 7.77GB out of 8. And I do not have too many apps running.

Please don't post "etrecheck" output in a reply to me. I have no use for it.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.

2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.

Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.

4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.

5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply.

6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin; clear; Fb='%s\n\t(%s)\n'; Fm='\n%s\n\n%s\n'; Fr='\nRAM details\n%s\n'; Fs='\n%s: %s\n'; Fu='user %s%%, system %s%%'; PB="/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c Print"; A () { [[ a -eq 0 ]]; }; M () { find -L "$d" -type f | while read f; do file -b "$f" | egrep -lq XML\|exec && echo $f; done; }; Pc () { o=`grep -v '^ *#' "$2"`; l=`wc -l <<< "$o"`; [[ l -gt 25 ]] && o=`head -n25 <<< "$o"`$'\n'"[$((l-25)) more line(s)]"; Pm "$1"; }; Pm () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=`sed -E '/^ *$/d; s/^ */ /; s/[-0-9A-Fa-f]{22,}/UUID/g' <<< "$o"` && printf "$Fm" "$1" "$o"; }; Pp () { o=`$PB "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'`; Pm "$1"; }; Ps () { o=`echo $o`; [[ ! Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.

8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter

exec bash

and press return. Then paste the script again.

9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.

If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.

10. The test will take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.

11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.

If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.

12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

A.

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may have a logic-board defect covered by this recall.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present. However, according to reports, some units may pass the test, and yet still be deemed eligible for repair under the program. Your experience may vary.

Note that the recall only applies within three years of purchase. After that, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.

The model was discontinued on February 24, 2011, so the recall has nominally ended. Some units may have been sold after that date by Apple as refurbished, or by resellers as new, and they should still be covered.

Some owners report that their unit was repaired under the program after the deadline had passed. Others report that the repair was covered by the extended warranty from a credit-card issuer. Again, your experience may vary.

Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.

If it's too late for your unit to be repaired under the program, and you don't want to pay for a new logic board, you may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching.

If you're dissatisfied with Apple's response, please keep in mind that no one here represents the company or can help with customer-service issues.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

B.

The system is intermittently slowing down because a temperature or voltage sensor returns an out-of-range reading. That could be normal behavior in response to overheating, a low battery, or a power "brownout," or it could be due to a failing battery or faulty sensor on the logic board.

The problem might be alleviated, at least temporarily, by resetting the System Management Controller (SMC).

If you have a MacBook, check the cycle count of the battery against the limit for your model. The battery may be due for replacement. If the power adapter is connected almost all the time, the battery may need replacing even though the cycle count is not too high.

Otherwise, if the machine is not unusually warm to the touch when the slowdowns happen, or if the machine does get hot but the fan doesn't seem to spin up, a hardware fault is likely. You may (or may not) be able to characterize it by running Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test. Even if the test shows nothing wrong, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested more completely.

If there is no hardware fault, anything you can to do increase airflow around the machine may help.

Thank you again for the assistance with this, Linc Davis.

I've had a lot of problems with this machine over the years. The logic board was replaced twice. Most recently, just last week. And they did run a variety of tests. I "assume" hardward tests were done. Therefore, option (A) is not the solution. Option (B)... I have noticed that my mac does get unusually hot at times. So perhaps it is a battery issue. I checked the battery cycles... it's at 929 out of 1000. I also reset the SMC.

But as I type this email... my RAM is running at 7.99GB with mail, safari, calendar, address book and aperature open. It is not currently overly hot.

As you say, it may just need a battery replacement... but my battery does not drain power overly fast and the cycle count still has some life in it.

I have the exact same machine. I had similar problems.

I downloaded a program called gfxCardStatus from http://gfx.io/

This allows me the force the "Integrated Intel HD" only and disable the switching. This has solved all my problems. It seems the problem is either the switching or the NVIDIA card is damaged. Keeping it on the Intel solves my crashing issue.

This app is great. Thanks to Cody Krieger and his contributors for writing it. He works on the Safari Team at Apple - http://careers.stackoverflow.com/codykrieger

Hope this will solve your issue.

I'm running a 2013 MBP 15", so I know it's different, but...

This week the temperature started rising fast any time it was running. That caused things to slow down a bit, the fan to come on full speed and, if I was on battery, it would drain fast. I downloaded SystemPal from the Apple Store, it has temperature monitors and usage info, (yeah I know that's also elsewhere, but I like having it all in one place on my toolbar.) In there it told me my temperatures were over 50C, and the big user was Dropbox! I noticed you had that running as well. As soon as I stopped Dropbox, the temperature dropped and the fan slowed down to normal. Dropbox is since restarted and all is running normally.

Don't misunderstand, I love Dropbox and use it all the time, but something got out of whack temporarily.

I thought I'd share this in case others have a similar problem.

Coysolar: I have a similar problem with mds and mds_store and mdworkers. They are using 4-5% resource and bring the amazing 98% system idle value (running chrome, activity monitor , stickies)

down to 93%.

How do I correct this “Bad path”?

I had a systemstat problem before this that was even worse. It was using 80% cpu and heating up the computer. I stopped the process and it would go away for a while. Now systemstat seems to be gone?

My most recent work and changes to system:

1.)Got rid of extra copy of numbers. I had 2.1 and 3.1 running together at times. The system migration brought over 2.1 Note that i first noticed systemstat and mds usage when running numbers.

2.) Set up “print to kindle”.

Other things of concern/alternative configs that seemed stable on old macbookpro2010 and this new computer since migration 2 months back.

1.) I have multiple partitions and VMware machine running off other logical drives.

2.) The extra audio drivers are not ever used … and were not a problem on old machine or this one. I noticed them in dump.

3.) I also run Istat menus.
