I updated to Mavericks 10.9.2 and lost audio.

It does not show internal speakers as an option to select in sound preferences. I have reset the pram and smc. I have played with the headphones jack, putting headphones in and out...no luck. Any help without having to do a full OS restore would be great.

Very common problem with updates. God knows why Apple insists on resetting the PRAM or Audio Midi Setup on each update with new audio frequencies causing some speakers and audio files to fail, but it has done so ever since DTS sound was added to its machines:

Now your machine may be under 4 years old, but as a caution, I do not recommend resetting the PRAM yourself if your machine is 4 years or older without checking if you have a PRAM battery or capacitor that might need replacing.

this worked for me, it is from another topic; it looks like getting back to sound drivers from ML does the thing;
