Q: My teenager got a crazy idea to what he calls jailbreak his phone and ruined it. I have no idea what this means.
My teenager got a crazy idea to what he calls jailbreak his i phone 4s. I don't think he even knows what that means, but he did it. He followed some instructions on Youtube and now every app and icon on his phone is gone. There are two apps left that do nothing.
I tried restoring it multiple times from my computer once with it off and one on. I have not been able to figure it out so he now has a phone that doesn't work. The weird thing is he can answer an incoming call and it shows the contact name.
Anyone have any suggestions on how I can do a hard restore?
Is the phone ruined?

You can try putting the iPhone into DFU mode, if you have not done so already, and see if that will let you restore and remove the jailbreak:

Some jailbreaks cannot be removed and in some cases will permanently disable the iPhone. If that has happened to your son's iPhone, then he will have to buy a new iPhone and learn the consequences of messing about. Apple will provide no support, warranty or out-of-warranty, for a jailbroken device.
Good luck.
