If update server:
Try:
- Powering off and then back on your router.
- iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
- Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
Public DNS — Google Developers
- For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem
- Try on another computer/network
- Wait if it is an Apple problem

Feb 26, 2014 7:18 AM in response to chelsbunby chelsbun,It keeps telling me my ipod is not compatiable and i need to get itunes 64bit so i have uninstalled it 5 times and re installed it and it is still saying the same. i then got told to download the ios 3.1.1 off tunes and i have no idea what to do with it but i have just wasted £2.99 on something that hasnt even worked. is my device too old to be updated?

- I would start with the following unless you revoed and reinstall all Apple software, not just iTunes:
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
or
However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Features app in the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components
- New cable and different USB port
- Run this and see if the results help with determine the cause
