Podcasting Crash Course...I NEED HELP :(

Ok guys, I know you have probably had to answer many of these questions before, but hopefully I can get some good advice here. Recently started a podcast and am still a bit confused on how the whole feed thing works. I have a link for my podcast feed that I want to submit, but I think I may have some things wrong. I'm going to list some of my questions with the hope that some of you may be able to answer (yes i'm talking to you Mr.Wilmut 🙂). I provided a link to my Podomatic feed (which is where the podcast was originally uploaded), and the feedburner for the podcast. Like I said, I'm not sure if I'm doing things right and I want to make sure that when I submit to Itunes everything looks great and comes out correct.

Podomatic Rss Feed: http://themacrocast.podomatic.com/rss2.xml

Feedburner: http://feeds.feedburner.com/themacrocastep1

Here are my list of questions as well. I have tried doing lots of research on my own but am still pretty confused as to whats right and whats wrong, that's why I'm turning to the community for help..

1. I see my feed shows the epsiode name in it, not sure if that is right or not..

2. When I upload a new episode to podomatic, how do I update my feedburner properly, and which link do I submit to itunes?

3. My category right is Society and Culture but I want to switch it to something more relevant to the podcast. How can I switch it so it affects the 1 episode we have and any future episodes.

4. What's the standard protocol when you have a new episode to submit.

Just a quick thank you to everyone who offers some insightful help. Thanks for all your time.

The Feedburner feed works OK when subscribing in iTunes, and plays the episode correctly.

However your 'itunes:image' in the head section of the feed links to a Photobucket page, not to an image, and that will get you rejected. You must provide a direct link to a jpg or png image which must 1400 x 1400 px, RGB, and no larger than 500kB.

Your episode has an image link to a very large image; this will not show in iTunes.

Your media file is at

http://themacrocast.podOmatic.com/enclosure/2014-02-23T21_06_08-08_00.mp3

This forces a download rather than playing when the URL is entered in Safari; it should play directly in the browser and this may cause a problem in the iTunes Store. An attempt to check for 'byte range requests' compatibility produced a 'not allowed' error: this facility (the method used by iPhones) is mandatory and you should check whether Podomatic can offer it.

The category would be set somewhere in Podomatic and it is there you should change it. You should stick to the categories listed here:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/specs.html#categories

You should submit your Feedburner feed rather than the Podomatic one, at this URL:

https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/publishPodcast

This will open iTunes to a pane where you can submit the podcast: again, enter the feed URL, not the URL of the media file. iTunes does not store your media, it just uses the contents of the feed file to provide the details and access on the iTunes Store. (None of this will cost you anything).

It may take some days before the podcast is accepted, since each new podcast has to be checked. You may be rejected for unauthorized use of copyright material, bad language and sexual content, libel, or racist comments - but of course you would never do any of those things, so you should be OK.

When your podcast is accepted, iTunes will give you a URL which will open iTunes to your podcast. You will also eventually be able to search on its title, though this can take some time to become available. However searching just on the category in the iTunes Store is most unlikely to throw up your podcast. There are thousands of podcasts out there, and it would be quite impossible to display on one page the entire list for any category. What you see are 'featured' podcasts, chosen by Apple as being special; please see this Tech Note: note that there is no way you can influence the selection other than making your podcast really special (bribery won't work).

When you want to add an episode (once you are accepted) you just add it in Podomatic in the same way that you added the first one and re-publish the feed. You don't have to submit it again. New episodes usually take 1-2 days to appear in the Store, though subscribers see them pretty well immediately.

You asked for a tutorial, and you may find this page helpful:

It also links to the very detailed Apple page on the subject.
