Does using my ipad as a GPS use data on my plan?

If I use my ipad as a GPS does it use up data on my plan? Also is it a lot of data? Planning a road trip and want to make sure that I don't blow through the data limit on my plan.

Thanks!

Use of location services itself does not cost you a thing. It all depends on the App you use to work with or display that location information. If the app streams data in real time, as the iOS Maps app and Google Maps do, then yes, it will be using cellular data whenever wifi is not available.

There are apps that download and store maps directly on the device itself, and thus can work with the device completely offline (cellular data and wifi off or disconnected), but you need to find an app that does not stream any real time data in the App Store.

And of course, to be clear, apps like iOS or Google Maps are useless without a live data connection. If they cannot stream their map data, they cannot display real time location information.

If this is a car trip, you can buy TomTom, Garmin or one of the other nav apps that bundle the maps as downloads to your device.
