This similar post https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5443101?answerId=23387764022#23387764022 said the USB cable was the culprit.

Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

I had this problem with my iPhone and my iPad. Doing all what's written in the web did not help me.

I sync both devices with some smart folders and the smart folder "In the last month" of my Aperture library. I did some photo stitching and editing recently which resulted in quite large files (> 100MB) in the library. Also, these files do not exist as JPEG, but as RAW and TIF.

Removing the folder "In the last month" from the photos synchronization of the devices did the trick.

I've had this same problem, and after several tries I finally solved it. It seems to be related with a corruption of the iPhoto Library:

1.- Quit iTunes.

2.- Open Finder, and go to wherever your iPhoto library is stored (usually ~/Pictures).

3.- Right-click on the iPhoto Library and select "Show package contents"

4.- Delete the "iPod Photo Cache" folder

5.- Close the finder window

6.- Open iPhoto. It might take some time for it to reload the library, but it's ok.

7.- When iPhoto finishes loading the library and you can browse your photos, close iPhoto

8.- Open iTunes, goto your device's Photo tab, and make shure the Sync photos options is UNCHECKED

9.- Sync your device

10.- After the sync finishes, CHECK the sync photo option. It will ask if the photos already in the device should be overwritten. I anserwered yes

11.- Select which photos, events, albums or faces you want to sync,

12.- Sync your device again, and it should do it, including your photos

Hope this helps.

Issue resolved for me thanks to Apple Care & Apple Engineers.

Here's what I did:

1. Update all software: iTunes, iOS, OSX, iPhoto (Aperture too, if applicable), etc.

2. The error code pertains to syncing photos so uncheck SYNC PHOTOS when syncing iOS device with iTunes.

3. Let the sync take place. It should be successful with no photo syncing taking place.

4. The previous step allowed your iOS device to clear-out old data so it's ready to sync with photos now.

Hope this works for all of you.

Cheers

I had the same problem. Here's how I fixed it on my iPhone 5 and iPad mini: I plugged them in and launched iTunes. When the device came up in the iTunes window, I selected the Photos tab. It took several minutes to load that tab, but when it did, it showed my settings had been changed to sync ALL of my photos, not my previous setting of "Past 3 Months." There isn't even close to enough room on either deveice to sync all of my photos.

I resolved it my unchecking "sync all my photos" and reselecting "Past 3 Month." I hit sync, and it worked perfectly again for both devices. Something, possibly in the last iTunes update, reset this particular setting for both my devices. Seems when iTunes tried to sync every single photo, it got caught in the 1723 error.

How can sync error code 1723 be resolved?
