Time machine not working with Mavericks. Won't connect to external HD.

I recently upgraded to OS X 10.9.2 Mavericks.

Not only is my computer noticeably slower to open applications but I can no longer access my network backup disk (WD MyBookLive).

Time Machine will not connect to it because "it does not support the required AFP features".

So I've lost all my backups and must now buy a new hard disk?

Not happy.

Is there a work around?

I've tried going back to my Time Capsule (1TB) which has never worked, and it still doesn't. The Macbook cannot detect it, even when attached to ethernet.

Did you upgrade from earlier version of Mavericks or an earlier OS.. You can always revert you know.. like if you were on mountain lion.. reboot the computer to the boot options and select the backup and go back.. it is well worth thinking about.

If you are have simply upgraded from earlier Mavericks.. then I guess you just need to live with it.

I shouldn't think the MyBook Live would fail with just an update.

I have no idea how to help you with the WD drive.. you would need to contact WD about if they have updated firmware or some such to make it compatible.

But I should be able to help you with the TC.

What model is it exactly.. A1xxx from the base. eg A1254 is gen1 A1302 is gen2 A1355 is gen3. All of those have 1TB disks.

Reset it to factory.. and plug it into the computer by ethernet.

Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.

Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.

Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on.. all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).

Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.

Note..

Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel.. add no more pressure after that.

TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.

No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

In the computer make sure you have IPv6 set to link-local for ethernet (and wireless for later connection).

Does the TC show as device that can be configured in the utility?

If not do you have an older computer running either windows or any os up to ML.. or even iOS device and you can download the iOS version airport utility which works a lot better than the Mavericks one.

Is the led on the TC flashing amber? Does the ethernet LED turn on to show connectivity on the TC?

Tell us more info if it fails.

Thanks for the reply,

I upgraded from Snow Leopard, so a big jump. (I'm using a Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo)

I’ve updated the firmware and software for the WD disk, now it is not rejected outright, just sits on ‘preparing backup’ in Time Machine prefs indefinitely.

Have shut down, unplugged and restarted several times. No joy.

Total fail on the Time Capsule, the green light is on, but could be a conflict with my router.

I did get the Airport Express to connect after a reboot. Unfortunately it knocked out my internet connection.

Shouldn’t it be subservient to my wireless modem? I’m on BigPond cable so need to use their modem/router.

All I want is to back up my data and wirelessly connect to my printer. Is that too much to ask?

Ahhh.. BP cable.. you are in home turf then. Tell me exactly what model modem you have.

Do you have an older pure modem? Follow this.

Did you power cycle the modem.. you must do that??

It does not usually need long off periods. Say turn it off for 5min.. and if that is not long enough try 15min which is a magical number for this kind of stuff. make sure it is over 15 so even 16min is better than 14. No luck an hour.

Now do factory reset on the TC.. as per instructions above.. plug cable modem to WAN and it should pick up the IP.

If you have a newer BP modem router.. Netgear CG model.. Follow this.

Then the TC must be in bridge mode.

The airport utility is terrible on the new Mavericks. Do you have an iOS device at least v6 then you can use the airport utility for iOS.

Run the setup and it should work.

Don't mess with the express until you get the TC working.

Plug the TC into the computer by ethernet.. and we can force it to work.. by sheer muscle power.

But I need to have accurate idea of what is going on.
