Do you have a bootable clone backup of your previous system? You would need to boot from such an external source to wipe your drive completely in order to reinstall an older system.
Depends on what came with your machine in the first place. Look up internet recovery mode [boot while pressing command + option + r]. This allows you to erase/reformat your HD from Disk Utility, and do a clean install of the OSX version that was originally placed on your machine...
Backup first!
Since the OP states that it's a 2009, it either came with Leopard or Snow leopard (early or late 2009 model), so internet recovery will not work. The original install disks would be needed.

OS X Lion is not 10.8, it's 10.7.
Which one do you want to install, Mountain Lion or Lion?
In any case, if you don't have a bootable backup, you'll have to re-install Snow Leopard from your DVDs and update it to the 10.6.8 level to get the App Store.
FWIW: you should keep Mavericks and work out whatever problems you're having.
If you don't mind me chiming in, I'd like to ad that I agree you should truy to work out the problems with Mavericks, which seem to be abundant, but on the other hand, you don't want to end up in the pre-historic age with your operating system. Eventually, nothing will wotk on your Mac.
I have been pelted with numerous problems with Mavericks, but I think I have most problems figured out except Mac Mail. I still have a problem with it running full boar in the background, downloading all the spam and trash files from my Gmail account, and I have not been able to stop it from doing that. Last time I looked there were almost 2000 spam emails and no way to get rid of them from Mac Mail.
I can't figure out why Apple took a good working app like Mac Mail and ruined it. I have to shut off my Mac Mail to let my Mac cool off..
Please direct your replies to the OP.
I bought a new Macbook Pro that came with Maverick. It's the most frustrating OSX - way too slow and I've tried all the workarounds. Is there a way to remove Maverick and load Mountain Lion from my old computer? I can reboot the OSX because it came with Maverick. I have Lion on the computer I used migration assistant for. Any ideas?
No Mac can be booted with an older OS than what it came with, so you cannot use your old OS on a newer Mac that came with Mavericks.
