Can anyone help me to sync my ipod classic version 1.3?

My ipod classic 1.3 won’t sync.

I've had it for years and it always synced automatically when I connected it to the computer. Yesterday, I updated my itunes and downloaded a few podcasts and when I connected my ipod, it deleted everything that was on it. It's all still in itunes but I can't make the ipod sync to it.

When I choose device and try to sync, the option to ‘sync only checked songs and videos’ is faded and not able to be ticked. My ipod recognises it’s connected but when I click ‘sync’, nothing happens.
